نسبت روایی محتوا یا CVR به‌طور ویژه بررسی می‌کند که هر گویه تا چه اندازه «ضروری» است. در این روش، متخصصان هر گویه را در سه دسته ضروری، مفید اما غیرضروری، و غیرضروری طبقه‌بندی می‌کنند. نسبت به‌دست‌آمده نشان می‌دهد چه تعداد از متخصصان یک گویه را غیرقابل حذف دانسته‌اند و در نتیجه برای ابقای آن در ابزار اولویت قائل شده‌اند.
این شاخص به‌ویژه در مرحلهٔ طراحی و توسعهٔ ابزار اهمیت دارد، زیرا مانع از طولانی یا غیرکارآمد شدن ابزار می‌شود. گویه‌هایی که CVR پایینی دارند معمولاً حذف می‌شوند و این کار باعث تمرکز بیشتر ابزار بر محتوای معنادار و ضروری خواهد شد. در نهایت، CVR به دقت علمی ابزار کمک کرده و آن را کارآمدتر و کاربردی‌تر می‌سازد.
